Make sure your child can play safely, especially when doing activities needing lots of space, or using equipment.

Check that clothing will not restrict the child’s movement, or get caught on equipment.

Throwing, kicking and hitting activities should be gentle enough to avoid injury.

Ensure landing areas are not slippery.

Ensure you have soft landing areas, such as grass or carpet, for activities where children are jumping off or over objects.

If walking or running, it is now important to consider footwear for your child – safe good quality lace up sneakers are ideal – not jandals or shoes with a high heel.

Take note of the ACC Sportsmart Programme – this 10–point action plan for sports injury prevention was developed primarily for sport coaches and athletes, however it is also important to the parent of physically active children.
